Day 43

Air / Water temperature: -8°C (-24°C at night) / 2°C

Wind direction / Bft: South / 1-6

Area:  THOLI STAGNUM (far and wide) – Nautical chart showing the route

Combuse: Angler (4 kg) break out intestines, remove skin and head, cut off from the tail a piece of 800 g together with the backbone, parry. Heat 2 tablespoons olive oil and sauté in it: 1 finely chopped onion, 2 cloves minced garlic, 1 seeded and finely chopped chilli, 100 g carrot in small cubes, 50 g bacon slices in fine sticks. Deglaze with: 6 dl red wine, ½ dl balsamic vinegar. Add: 2 sprigs thyme, 4 stalks of parsley, 1 heaping tablespoon honey, abrasion of 1 lemon and 1 orange, 1 bay leaf, 3 cloves, 1 teaspoon black pepper. Bring to boil, then reduce and simmer over low heat 5-10 minutes, let it cool. Give fish together with this sauce in a plastic bag, seal well and marinate in the refrigerator for 24 hours. Turn bag over from time to time. Take the fish out of the marinade, pat dry with paper towels and leave for 1 hour at room temperature to warm. Pour marinade through a sieve, use vegetables separately. Simmer the liquid for ten minutes and thereby reduce it by one third. Salt and pepper the fish and sprinkle with a little flour. Heat 2 tablespoons olive oil and fry the fish on both sides. Put it in an ovenproof dish and give it into the oven at 220°. Cook for 15 minutes and poured over marinade again and again – so that in the end no marinade is left. (More recipes from the Chief cook of «PS Narina»)

Observations

When I close my eyes I gradually see a fixed horizon. And I hear how the sea brings its waters thundering down on the shore in regular cycles. For far and wide there’s nothing to be seen – quite improbable that anything will pop out of this horizon. I, the island, am alone, and at the mercy of the immobility of my horizon. Yet, out there beyond the viewing hatch hides the rest of the world.

A tiny island seems to pop up out of the blue of one’s imagination when one closes one’s eyes: it is fundamentally an absolute boundlessness – infinity. Precisely because it is not a part of this earth at the moment, it wants to engulf the rest of it. And precisely because it is not even a dot on the map is it the length and the breadth of all that it engulfs.

Only, how does an ant that, in reality, accidentally climbed on to a boat and can now, after weeks at sea, finally get off board, feel when it lands up in a piece of fiction?
