Why the heck hadn't he held his breath long enough? Sure, he wasn't a mermaid who can breathe underwater – but still, he could have held out until perhaps the end of the song.

He had tried in all earnestness to bring at least Marie or Odette under the bathfoam with his burning shoulder – but he had been unable to take a decision and ultimately simply let it be. His shoulder prickled and stung even a few hours later. However, it felt increasingly weird – like a souvenir from a journey that one had never undertaken.
